You can also follow the @Dai_Cast twitter feed to find out our recording schedule and tune in live. So sit back, grab your insulin, and just try to avoid a sugar coma in this week’s Dai-Cast.

This time around we go into the new immigration practice in Japan of fingerprinting and photographing all foreigners upon entry to the country. We go into what this means to you, and your civil liberties, and then launch off in all directions of personal freedom, security and surveillance.

This week, we’re introducing a new feature here at tiltyhouse.com, Dai-Cast Supplemental. Every week, Dai-Cast Supplemental will give you a chance to learn a little something more about Japan, and allow us to clear out our archives of old topics which didn’t make it into the full length show. All in 3-5 minute easily digestible chunks!
This week, Ian brings up the Japanese rejection of robots as caregivers, and talks about the rise of Canadian music in Japan. Plus, Jap-Snacks brings you ナンデスカ?
On this weeks show, we start out with a ridiculous discussion of Legend of Galactic Heroes bootleg DVDs, pronunciation of ridiculous, slashdot commentary, and the rules of Dai-Cast. Then we move onto real topics, starting with the examination of the link between the lost Jewish Tribes of Israel and Japan. Then we look into claims of genocide on the part of Emperor Akihito, for introducing a foreign species of fish into Lake Biwa. And we critique an American artists take on Cosplay culture, and a new Cosplayers Rights Group in Japan. NHK decides to tell us what they really want to show us through a Weather Report. Love Letters from the Police (without Sting) are calming down teens in Iwate Prefecture. And finally a story from 1968 of how to get yourself out of trouble, by TELLING THE TRUTH.

This week on Dai-Cast we return to the Tokyo Big Sight for the 27th Tokyo Design Festa. In addition to a taste of the sensory extravaganza that is the Festa itself, we interview a number of gaijin, or foreign artists to get their take on the event, and how their work fits into the Japanese aesthetic. So sit back, prepare to be Festa’d at, and enjoy this week’s Dai-Cast!
Featuring:
- Rudy Van Os
- Crystal Morey
- Muckhouse
- Run From Monster
- Trio Magnus
- Stephen Redmond
- and Phil Hannaford
- With music from Chi Weapon.
This week, on Dai-Cast it’s “Dai Cast Zeta”, where we pick one particular topic on Japan or Japanese pop culture, and stick with it, exhaustivly expressing our opinions for your education, elucidation, emancipation, and mental emolument, to summarily beat it into the ground, so that we never need to revisit the topic again.
On this particular round, we’re tackling celular phones in Japan, or Ketias. And to take the pulse of the gadget blogosphere, we’ve invited Joel Johnson of BoingBoing Gadgets to give us a geek’s view of Japanese phones from the outside world.
So sit back, and prepare to be educated at!

On this week, we’ve got a laundry list of Liquid Plumber and Vaseline, and start things off with a little anecdote about Ian’s adventures with Junior High students. Then we get a big X from the industry over Batsu punishment games on Japanese TV. But it can all be cleared up by going to a brothel together, if “Japanese Business Traditions” can be believed from the Dentsu CEO. Meanwhile, KFC beats a hasty retreat out of Japan, making room for the Mitsubishi Snackwitch, which will unfortunately not be honoured by the Nova Ex-Employee Work for Food program. Or, they could simply sign up for the Japanese millitary, for their new army of Gundams. And finally, all aboard the Yamanote Halloween Train – Controversy!
Broadcasting to you, not-quite-live from the crystal gondola in the palatial main Tiltyhouse studios in beautiful downtown Noda City Japan, for the education, elucidation, emancipation, enlightenment and mental emolument of the Nipponistic hoi-polloi.

This week we bring you as usual, our cornucopia of pop culture topics of and about Japan! Included, but not limited to new marketing techniques for bands, ripped off from Japan. Then we look at the Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi dubs’ perversion of that particular marketing technique. Also, it’s time for a public service announcement; smell like a flaming monkey or dirty little boy with Crayon Shin-Chan and Pokemon cologne, and warn you of upcoming high priced Katamari downloads. And we give yet more warnings, vending machines may not be what they seem in Japan.
Plus, now you see it, now you don’t; magic teleportation lockers leave your goods secure, and shipped straight from your vacation spot to your door. And of course, Beej’s patented web-comic of the week.

Greetings and salutations from the Crystal Gondola here in Japan! This week, we record in the middle of one of Ian’s Japanese Death Colds.
As for topics, we look into the Christian Manga world of Zondervan, invoking the horror of Mark Twain’s “The Mysterious Stranger”. We touch on the Wikipedia hullabaloo over control of the Gundam Ministry, with a quick look at Japanese life insurance plans.
Aaaaannnndddd… We go on and on about the split between ADV and Geneon, degrading into our usual rant on the bad new-media practices of the Anime industry, and the rest of the world… Then we remember Duel Love, the answer to the little girl witch touching game, Doki Doki Mahou Shinpan. And we wrap things up with a discussion on the end of “School Days”. So put on your mask, listen in, and enjoy this special contagious Dai-Cast. Just make sure to wash your hands afterwards…

So by now you all should have noticed that the Dai-Cast Episode 52 Spectacular hasn’t been released for consumption. Well, there’s a reason for that, and a very NON-technical one at that.
You see, I am currently unable to access my keyboard for extended periods of time, due to debilitating back pain. Oddly enough, it seems to be something that hits me every February, or at least these past 3 years. Impending Oscar announcements, stress in the workplace, Valentines Day, sunspots? Who knows what the cause is, the result is the same…
So Dai-Cast is going to take another week off to let this clear itself up, and hopefully get the necessary editing and compositing done to keep you, the viewing public, happy.
I wish I could quit you…

This week, we bring you a special Classic Dai-Cast, the first ever tiltiltyhouse podcast, from Sakuracon 2005!
Dai-Cast listeners, you’ve heard us talk about it long enough. You’ve heard us rant and rave about the wonders of Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan. Now is your time to own a copy, and now is the time to let us give it to you.
But where does the challenge come in? All you have to do is get as many people as you know to download, and listen to Dai-Cast. You’ve got 2 weeks to do it, so get on us. Just point your friends, family, and random people on the street to tiltyhouse.com, and send us:
- your name
- their first name, and last initial
- their email address, and
- your email address
The winner of the contest will be the person who submits the most new listeners. In the event of a tie, the winner will be chosen at random. Don’t worry, we won’t be using your email addresses for anything nefarious, just simply tracking that these people actually exist.
The contest runs for the next two(ish) weeks, ending November 26th. The contest is open to all listeners of Dai-Cast who have not won something from us in the past . (Keychain winners are still eligible, you’re prizes are in the mail)
Submit your entries either by clicking on the ”contact us” link at the top of the page, or to dai-cast@tiltyhouse.comLet’s get the word out faithful listeners, because when more people listen to Dai-Cast, everyone is a winner.
